Success Story

A Second Chance at Life

The Emergency In the calm morning of January 5, 2023, a call came from our Emergency Department. During the late hours of the night, community police had rescued an unconscious young boy from the roadside. He arrived completely unknown—no identity, no family, no medical history.

The Diagnosis While his spine and limbs appeared clinically and radiologically normal, a CT scan of the brain revealed a linear fracture of the right temporal and parietal bones, along with an acute subdural hematoma (AcSDH), extradural hematoma (EDH), and traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (tICH). Showing ventricular effacement, a midline shift, and a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of only 4 out of 15, he presented clear signs of severe brain injury.

The Intervention We hoped he had arrived within the "golden hour," roughly four hours post-incident. When life and death stand face to face, there is no room for hesitation or waiting endlessly for paperwork. Prioritizing life above all, we informed hospital administration—who notified local authorities—and immediately proceeded with an emergency, life-saving surgery, which was completed smoothly.

The Patient's Background After remaining under close observation in the ICU for nearly ten days, his family finally arrived. We learned he was a 17-year-old garment worker living with his grandparents. His grandfather worked as a security guard, and his single mother had been working in a garment factory in Jordan to support him. The tragedy occurred when the young boys went on a helmetless motorcycle ride on the highway around 3 a.m.—a result of youthful excitement, unaware of life's fragility.

The Outcome By the grace of Almighty Allah, his story did not end there. After the primary rescue surgery (Decompressive Craniectomy), we performed a reconstructive Cranioplasty two months later using his preserved bone. Today, he is neurologically well, conscious, and independent.
